How to Make Healthy Slushies — Homestead Recipe Basics

healthy slushies

Slushies typically contain unhealthy dyes and flavorings with no nutritious value. However, you can use the drink as a way of giving your kids fruits and vegetables high in vitamins and nutrients by making homemade healthy slushies. Colorful fruits contain phytochemicals and antioxidants that may protect your family against heart disease, cancer and high blood pressure. Different colored fruits and vegetables are great for different functions in the body. Yellow and orange fruits are typically nourishing to the heart, immune system and eyes. Blue fruits, such as blueberries, can help to improve memory.

Pure fruit juice

blender

Ice (optional)

Freezing Fruit

Select the fruit you would like to make your slushies with. Remove any inedible peels from your fruit.

Step 2

Wash your fruit under cool, running water. Make sure to thoroughly dry off any remaining water.

Step 3

Cut larger fruit into 1‑inch pieces, and put them into storage containers. Freeze your fruit overnight.

Blending Slushy

Step 1

Select a pure fruit juice that is free of additives and preservatives. Pour 1 cup of your juice into the blender.

Step 2

Measure out 3/4 cups of your frozen fruit. Add the fruit to the blender, and blend it until it becomes slushy.

Step 3

Add another 3/4 cups of frozen fruit to the blender. Blend and add up to 1 cup more of juice, as needed, to get the slushy to the consistency you desire.

Step 4

Pour and serve your slushies once they are blended to the desired consistency. Blend ice into your slushies if they are too thin.

Tip

Experiment with adding vegetables such as carrots or celery to your slushies for more nutritional benefits.
