How to Best Grow, Care for and Harvest Broccoli

Broccoli prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade. It grows best in well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. If your soil is heavy and clay-like, you may need to amend it with compost or other organic matter to improve drainage.

To grow broccoli from seed, start the seeds indoors six to eight weeks before your last frost date. Sow the seeds in a tray or small pots and keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Once the seedlings have developed their second set of leaves, transplant them into the garden. Space the plants 18 to 24 inches apart in rows that are 2 to 3 feet apart. Harvest Broccoli:

Broccoli is ready to harvest when the heads are firm and tight. The heads should be about 4 to 7 inches in diameter. Harvest the heads before they begin to flower or turn yellow. Cut the heads off the plant with a sharp knife, leaving about 6 inches of stem attached to the head. After the main head is harvested, the plant will continue to produce smaller side shoots. These can be harvested as they mature.
