How to Grow Garlic from a Bulb — 6 Steps to Grow a Bountiful Crop

Garlic is a staple ingredient in many cuisines, prized for its distinct flavor and numerous health benefits. But did you know that growing your own garlic is a simple and rewarding process? With just a little effort, you can grow garlic from a bulb and harvest a bountiful crop of fresh garlic that will enhance your cooking and impress your friends and family. In this article, we’ll show you how to grow garlic from a bulb, step by step.

Steps to Grow Garlic from a Bulb

Step 1: Choose the right garlic bulbs

The first step in growing garlic is to choose the right bulbs. Look for high-quality garlic bulbs at your local nursery or online. Avoid bulbs that are soft or have mold or other signs of damage. It’s also important to choose a garlic variety that is well-suited to your climate and growing conditions.

Step 2: Prepare the soil

Garlic grows best in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. If your soil is too acidic, add lime to raise the pH. If it’s too alkaline, add sulfur to lower the pH. Work in plenty of organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure to improve soil structure and fertility. Garlic prefers a loose, crumbly soil that allows for good drainage and root growth.

Step 3: Plant the garlic

Break apart the garlic bulb into individual cloves, being careful not to damage the cloves or remove the papery outer layer. Choose the largest, healthiest cloves for planting. Plant the cloves about 2 inches deep and 6 inches apart, with the pointed end facing up. Cover the cloves with soil and water well.

Step 4: Mulch the bed

After planting, cover the bed with a layer of mulch such as straw, leaves, or grass clippings. This will help to retain moisture in the soil, suppress weeds, and keep the soil temperature consistent. Leave a small space around each garlic plant to prevent moisture buildup and promote air circulation.

Step 5: Water and fertilize

Garlic needs regular watering to grow well, especially during the growing season. Water deeply once or twice a week, depending on rainfall and soil moisture levels. Avoid overhead watering, which can promote disease. Fertilize the garlic bed once a month with a balanced fertilizer such as 10–10-10, or use organic options such as compost or fish emulsion.

Step 6: Harvest and cure the garlic

Garlic is ready to harvest when the leaves begin to turn brown and dry out, usually in mid- to late summer. Carefully dig up the bulbs with a garden fork or shovel, being careful not to damage them. Shake off any excess soil and lay the bulbs out in a dry, well-ventilated area to cure for several weeks. This will allow the outer skins to dry and the flavors to develop.

Growing garlic from a bulb is an easy and rewarding process that can yield a bountiful crop of flavorful and healthy garlic. By following these simple steps, you can grow your own garlic and enjoy the taste and health benefits of this versatile ingredient.
